Tenement

7' x 6' x 6' installation

mixed media © 2005

The sculptural installation Tenement encapsulates life in general: the “good” and the “not so good” aspects that coexist. While some windows are dark orcovered with curtains to maintain privacy, others allow one to look in. The tenants, heard or seen through the windows in video and still images, participate in various activities, such as eating, watching television, arguing, and sleeping. Jack Nicholson, in an edited video clip, continuously yells the same thing, over and over. A couple kisses, a younger and older woman unpack groceries, a woman continually hangs a shirt in a closet, and the daily occurences of life repeat. Tenement invites the viewer to become a voyeur of daily life and its intimacies.
